One of the main reasons we started doing the tournament was for Gene's son Ethan. He was only about 3 years old when his father passed away. He never got to know Gene, but through the tournament he got to see what a special person Gene was and how important he was to the dive community.
Ethan is a junior in high school now and is planning to go to a mainland college. So we want to use the final Gene Higa event as a fundraiser for his college fund.
Gene's wife Sheryl was very reluctant to accept any money, but she finally decided that it was OK if we really wanted to do it.
(If anyone is interested donating items to the raffle, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.)
Last year was the first time we held a paid raffle and we were able to raise over $5,000 for Waialua Elementary School. We've held the tournament on the North Shore for over 10 years, so we wanted to give back to community.
Having a fundraiser for Ethan's college fund just seems like a great way to wrap up the event.
Also PLEASE NOTE: There will be a major change in the tournament format. We want to make the finale into a more fun event.
So we are going to flip the award categories:
5 Places - 3 prong Division
2 Places - Speargun
3 Places - Tako
Hope to see everyone at Tsue's Farm on May 12.
